“When it rains, it pours. But when it’s sunny, why do feel the need to wear sunglasses?” – Ali Bubba
Ali Bubba has given me enough material from this past year that I could sit and just write for weeks. I usually like to compare a quote of his with a personal story, or a story that is told through somebody I know. I don’t really have a story to go along with this. But, I also don’t think it’s necessary. I think we have all been at fault, at least once, of complaining about when things are bad in our lives, but fail to rejoice in the good times that come in between.
Life is full of up’s and down’s, that’s a given. Some of us learned this at a fairly young age. It’s how you deal with the situations at hand that determine how happy you can be. Many of us are very familiar with the saying, “When it rains, it’s pours.” We have probably caught ourselves muttering it from time to time as well. In the midst of all the troubles and pain, sometimes we find ourselves constantly dwelling on everything bad that is happening. This is normal. For some people this way of thinking is their way of lighting the fire under their butt to try and fix things. For some people, it’s simply a way to reflect on the situations at hand, and understand how they got to that point so they can try to avoid it again. But why is it that when things are going good, we don’t bask in the glory of all our blessings?
Here’s a few for you to think about. If you’ve made it this far into the post, I can already point out these blessings.
1) You are not blind. (and I don’t mean, “OMG! I am soooo blind without my glasses” blind)
2) You can read. (don’t laugh, some people your age can’t)
3) You are still breathing. (this is good because it means you’re alive)
4) You have access to a computer. (some people think Windows 7 is what comes standard in a Chevy Tahoe)
5) You are smart enough to use your spare time to enlighten your mind (that one’s for me)
In all seriousness, anytime things may seem to be on the right track, I guarantee you don’t notice all the good things that are happening around you. Think about this. How often do you use a public restroom and curse the gods when you just finished dropping a doozy of a twoozy and there is no toilet paper? It’s pretty much the end of the world at that point. What about when you enter a stall and there is toilet paper? We usually don’t think much of it. Sometimes if we know why we are using the public restroom, ahem, then we check first to make sure the paper roll is full. But on average, we don’t really think about the toilet paper until it’s not there. Acknowledging the toilet paper is there when you need it seems like a small detail. Try to find these little details in your everyday life. You can even find the little blessings when things seem to be in the dumps. Yeah sure, being stuck in morning traffic on the way to work really bites. But be happy that you have a car, and that you even have a job to go to. Some people don’t have either. Some people are stuck sitting at home writing for a website that hasn’t brought in any revenue and is constantly mistaken for gay porn, while his friends and family tell him he’s doing a great job but probably think it will come to an end shortly anyways. I’m just saying, there’s probably someone out there like that.
Bottom-line, when life brings you times of peace and happiness, take off your sunglasses, think about all the blessings you have, and take a second to realize that you really do have something special.
